Fertilizer in powder extracted from red algae
Lithotamnion is a powder extracted from the calcareous red algae (Lithothamnium calcareum) a mineral present in the French Atlantic coasts, characterized by a strong calcareous armour; the beneficial effects of the algae flour are determined by the rich content of calcium carbonate, magnesium and especially, trace elements. This composition ensures litotamio to have a wide range of uses in agroecology.
Uses of the red alga in the cultivation
This powder is widely used in organic and biodynamic farming, as it performs several functions:
- Phytostimulant: the high content of calcium carbonate (80-85%), magnesium (10-15%) and trace elements makes it an excellent product for promoting the development of the plant and its ability to self-defense. The treated plants regularly grow healthy and strong thanks to the presence of trace elements and natural hormonal substances
- Fertilizer: it improves the structures and the pH of acidic soils; In soils tending to acidity, it can be used to increase the pH value and bring the soil near to neutrality. Usually 3kg/100 square meters are enough. Particularly suitable in the restoration of land conducted with synthetic fertilizers, since the rich content in trace elements stimulates the microflora activity of the soil.
- Pesticide: the lithotamnion powder on the plant creates a thin layer of calcareous particles which is an obstacle to the mouthparts of insects that are fed by the green parts of the plant as well as by the penetration of pathogens.
The lithotamnion is an excellent fertilizer for the garden and the orchard, in the dose of 5 kg per 100 square meters. Because of being rich in calcium, magnesium and trace elements it is particularly suitable in acidic soils which are poor in humus.
