Decorate your fall
We grow ornamental gourds like regular gourds. If we intend to try our hand at this type of cultivation, we now begin to obtain the seeds, after which we prepare the soil during the winter that will welcome our plants in the spring.
- The soil must be well fertilized and close to a fence or a pergola, because the pumpkins are greedy and often in need of support, or at the edge of the garden where the pumpkins can run with their vegetation and cover uncultivated and unused parts.
Sowing instructions
Sowing pumpkins in seedbeds - If we want to grow pumpkins in regions with a continental climate, it could be useful to sow them in early spring in a seedbed, in pots with a diameter of about 8 cm filled with soil suitable for sowing.
- We will place two seeds for each jar at a depth of about 2.5 cm, always with the tip pointing downwards to help germination and prevent them from rotting and we will ensure that the temperature does not drop below 16-18 °.
- After about a week we will see the first sprouts, but only later, only when the seedlings have released the third leaf will we eliminate the weakest one.
- When the outside temperature has stabilized and the danger of freezing is over, we will transplant them to the garden (not before having acclimatized them) into holes enriched with peat or compost, where the seedlings will immediately find a suitable soil for small roots.
- When to collect them? when the skin of the pumpkin is very hard and the stalk is brown, we cut the fruit from the shoot leaving 2-3 cm of stalk! The proposed variety is an assorted mixture of various shapes and types of gourds suitable for ornamentation.
